I wrote similar criticism at BON and it was both recommended and flamed. The flamers were ARDENT.

Chris Ogden ate breakfast at Naus Enfield on Fridays when he was RB's assistant and we picked his thoughts a lot. Naus closed its fountain after fifty years or so and unless I can find out where Ogden will lurk for breakfast on Fridays I will continue to have no source of info except you.

After covering Big XII basketball for as long as you have, I'm surprised you have to look up how to spell Huggins!

Thanks for the write up! Too many Texas fans are running with this like we hired a Blue Blood HOF coach and its getting annoying (and your positives were good to read too!)

I'll preface this by saying I'm not super-excited by the Beard hire, in large part because grinding out 20-plus games per year is not going to be the most entertaining basketball.

As for the process, I have a question (or set of questions): was this hiring process unusual? i.e. do the athletic departments typically vet more candidates, do more diligence, and rely more on the process itself to find a good fit? I only follow Texas closely, at least in terms of coaching hires, and this seems to be pretty typical: they find the "hot" head coach that seems available to take the "next step" into coaching at a big, flagship school--see, e.g., Charlie Strong, Tom Herman, and Shaka.

I'll also say that I thought Shaka was going to be a home run, so I clearly have no idea what I'm talking about :-)

Everything you wrote was very reasonable. I appreciate your perspective. It is something all us Texas fans need to keep us grounded when there is a new hire. As always time will tell.

My hope is that he does bring in talent, finds some good tweaks for the offense, and surfs the wave on defense. That would make all of us happy.

I don’t have a social media platform anymore from which to yell at you, and anyway, what you’re saying seems sadly very right. We’ll both hope you’re really wrong and be thrilled the next 7 years??? Or just start watching excitement like UCLA last night!

So what you're saying is we essentially re hired Rick Barnes without having to really hire him, but for more money?

Honestly, after the last 6+ years, an occasional sweet 16 does not really seem that bad. It's been the constant underperforming to recruiting and early season play that has made it unbearable. Just having a "good" team that generally does what's expected and occasionally makes a run would be so much more enjoyable then what we have had in the past.

Don’t worry I’ve been getting roasted on IT....I have nothing nice to say about this Anointment. So my investment will be about as supportive as the fans in the FEC the past decade

why the f*** didnt we get Calipari? This really just feels like the type of hire UT fans regret 2 years in. Process is eerily similar to the ones that landed Herman and Smart

I’m at the point where I’m just fine about the hire. I’m not excited, I’m not upset, just fine. I’m rooting for Beard either way. Mostly rooting that he surprises me and further develops the offense (or at least brings in assistants that help to develop). But I have no idea how this plays out. I have realized over the years how foolish it is for me, a noted idiot, to predict anything like what to expect from a new coach hire.

I am happy that we didn’t get Altman as rumored at least. I couldn’t believe the number of people online still insistent on him even after being pointed to the scandal.
